Four days after losing a legal battle against Kylian Mbappé and being ordered to pay him nearly €61 million, Paris Saint-Germain still took a moment to acknowledge their former star on his birthday.
On Saturday, as Mbappé turned 27, PSG posted a simple message on social media:
“Kylian Mbappé turns 27! Happy birthday, Kylian.”
A gesture that did not go unnoticed — and certainly did not go uncontested — among Parisian supporters.
A Divisive Message Among PSG Fans
The timing of the post sparked mixed reactions. Some fans reacted with irony:
“The most expensive birthday message in history.”
“He got a nice gift.”
“A €61 million post.”
Others applauded the club’s attitude, praising PSG’s fair play despite the recent court ruling. But many supporters were far less forgiving, still frustrated by the circumstances of Mbappé’s departure to Madrid in the summer of 2024 and by the judicial decision handed down earlier this week.
“Aren’t you ashamed?”
“No dignity.”
“No need to be hypocritical.”
Mbappé Focused on History with Real Madrid
For Mbappé, however, Saturday likely brought a different kind of focus. The French captain had the opportunity to make history with Real Madrid later that evening in La Liga against Sevilla.
One goal at the Santiago Bernabéu would be enough for him to equal Cristiano Ronaldo’s record for most goals scored in a calendar year with Real Madrid — 59 goals in 2013. Mbappé moved closer to that milestone on Wednesday, scoring twice in the Copa del Rey against Talavera (3–2) to reach 58 goals in 2025.
From a collective standpoint, a Real Madrid victory would also increase pressure on Barcelona in the title race, cutting the gap at the top of the table to just one point ahead of Barça’s trip to Villarreal on Sunday.
